Harry Mortimer O.B.E. 1902 - 1992.

Well, there can't be a better known Brass Band Celebrity than the great 'HM' and although he became associated with Foden's Motor Works and The Fairey Aviation Bands, he did his early playing in Luton's Junior Band and went on to become the principal player in the senior Band. His youngest brother Rex, was actually born in Luton. There is more on the Mortimer's in our 'History' page, and we are, naturally, proud of our link with HM and his family. The Mortimer's moved north to Sandbach and Foden's in 1924/1925. In 1942, Harry went to work for the BBC, taking over the duties of Dr. Denis Wright. In 1950, at the ripe old age of 48 (!!) he gave up playing to concentrate on conducting and his work at the Beeb.
