THE NEWSLETTER OF CRYSTAL PALACE BAND

Issue: 1 (Autumn 2002)

Welcome to the first ever edition of 'Palatians', the newsletter of Crystal Palace Band. This is a new venture, designed to inform you of news and events with the Band. Fixtures, news and contact details will be included, as well as reports from the brass band world in general. You will be able to learn the history of the band, and find out what we're up to.
Published quarterly and edited by Clare Lipscombe and Richard Lovett, we are interested to know what you would like to see in 'Palatians'. Profiles on band members? Concert reviews? Please let us know - all contact information is on the other side of this newsletter.
We are also thinking of starting up a supporter's club, 'Friends Of Crystal Palace Band'. You would continue to receive 'Palatians', but in addition to this the club would offer reduced entry to some of our concerts. Competitions and a separate newsletter would also be included. A small annual charge of £5, to cover postage, would be made per family. Again, please let us know your views on this.

A brief introduction to
Crystal Palace Band
NEWS FROM THE BAND ROOM…

Crystal Palace Band was formed in 1901 as the Upper Norwood Temperance Band and changed its name to Crystal Palace Band once it became closely associated with musical entertainment at the Crystal Palace. In the past the band has been conducted by people such as Dr Dennis Wright, Derek Greenwood and James Watson. Since 1987, the Band's conductor has been Michael Gray. In 1995 the Crystal Palace 'B' Band was formed, which welcomes new players of all abilities and ages. Last year finished with the main Band's Gala Centenary Concert, where a cheque for over £1,000 was presented to St Christopher's Hospice. This year, the Band is hoping to hold another concert in November, which will again be in aid of St Christopher's - more details to follow soon. After returning from a successful trip to Epernay the Band is now preparing for a number of upcoming contests, of which the first is the SCABA Autumn contest in Folkestone.

Congratulations are in order for Adam Payn, the band's percussionist. Adam was recently voted 'Resources Division Employee of The Year' in the Housing Benefits Department of Lewisham Council. Well done Adam!

Following our success with two quartets and a nine-piece group at the SCABA Godalming Ensemble contest in February 2002, some of the Band performed at the SCABA Day of Brass in June at The Hawth, Crawley. Pieces included 'Euryanthe', J.S. Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' and Denzil Stephens' perky Eb Bass feature, 'The Imp'.

COMING UP…

Preparations are underway for the Charity Gala Concert, which will be held at Ravensbourne School on November 30. Watch this space…

Crystal Palace Band returns from Epernay

The August Bank Holiday saw Crystal Palace Band travelling to Epernay, a picturesque town in the Champagne region of France. This was the Band's first trip here, but not the Band's first association. A few years ago, the Band performed Grieg's Piano Concerto with soloist Richard Dunbril. His parents, Richard and Suzanne Dunbril, met during the war and then settled in Epernay. When Roger Clements, the Band's Chairman, wrote to Suzanne about the possibility of the Band visiting France for this year's trip she put him in touch with Philippe Gintzburger. Philippe is the Minister of Culture for Epernay and the surrounding regions, and an ex professional Tuba player - and invited us to participated in Epernay's annual Summer Music Festival.

The first concert was played on Saturday night at Le Place Mendes-France. With the sun setting in the background the Band played for two hours, going on to a dinner nearby, which Philippe had arranged. The second concert was on Sunday morning, on the steps of the Hotel de Ville. This performance was followed by a formal Civic Reception in the Town Hall Building, where well-earned thanks were given to Suzanne, Philippe and everyone else involved in organising the trip, and a plaque of the Band's logo was presented to Philippe.

Along with the concerts, the Band visited two Champagne Houses and made use of the many excellent bars and restaurants in the town! The trip was an outstanding success and thanks must once again be given to all those involved in its organisation, most noticeably Suzanne and Richard Dunbril, Philippe Gintzburger and Roger Clements.

The following is an extract from an article in "L'Union", the local newspaper of Epernay. To read it in its entirety, to view photos or to hear more about the Band's trip to Epernay, either visit the website on www.crystalpalaceband.fsnet.co.uk or contact the Editors.

"A square laid out under hundred year old trees, a good weather forecast for once, high quality musicians, all the ingredients came together for the [Saturday night] concert given by the Crystal Palace Band, honoured guests for the weekend. …[Mike Gray, the conductor] directs them with great competence that has allowed them to achieve a particularly high level of music while still staying rooted in the life of the local community. With typical British 'cool'… all musical genres were undertaken without any worries. Music from variety shows, from films, jazz and the classical and traditional styles gave the instrumentalists the opportunity to show their abilities that, it must be said, nobody doubted. [Sunday's concert] enchanted the public once again - and they want more!"
