THE NEWSLETTER OF CRYSTAL PALACE BAND

Issue: 12 (Summer 2005)
Hello, my name is Carol. Welcome to this summer edition of Palatians, the twelfth overall but my first as editor. On your behalf I’d like to say a big thank you to Clare Lipscombe for initially founding and then writing the newsletter for the past 3 years. Thank you Clare you’ve done a great job and I will do my best to keep up the good work.

A Celebration Concert
As you will remember in our last issue of Palatians we learned of the sad loss of our friend and most long standing band member Roger Clements. With Roger in mind the band has decided to host a musical tribute. The date for your diaries is 22nd October 2005 at St George’s Parish Church, Beckenham. There will be a retiring collection for St Christopher’s Hospice. Please come along, bring all your friends and help us to make this an evening to remember.

Attention all past members of Crystal
Palace Band.

Help us build a memorable band for a memorable concert.

We would very much like you to add your support to the current membership of the band. If you would like to play we need to know by August 31st at the latest. All contact details are at the end of this newsletter. When we know who wants to join in for the evening Mike will be able to organise the sections. You will all be asked to wear the uniform of the band (if any) in which you are playing today as we feel that this will show just how wide friendships (and particularly of course Roger’s friendships) spread in the banding world…

...... and they spread a long way.....

The following is just one of the many messages that have been left in the Guest book on the band’s web site…

Found your web site surfing the net one night. Sorry to hear about Roger’s passing. He was a great guy, full of fun and I remember him well. I was a member of the CPB during the reign of MD Malcolm Simmonds. I was a trombone player. We met up with Malcolm and his wife Isobel in 2003 on a visit to Europe with the family, and still keep in touch. I recognise some of the names in the guest book. We now live in Adelaide, South Australia. I still play bass trombone and currently am a member of the Unley Concert Band which came 3rd in the Australian Nationals. My best wishes to the band for the future.

No, we don’t expect Alan will be playing with us in October

As you can see we are busy this summer, let’s hope the weather does justice to our efforts! Please come and listen whenever you can, we value your support.
This summer we hope to play some of your favourites including a Gershwin selection, Sinatra songs and some good overtures and marches. We are also working hard on a Star Trek arrangement (which is rather difficult) and we have some lovely solo items that are being practiced by various members of the band.

Apologies to anyone who went to Canbury Gdns. in Kingston on the 5th June and found we weren’t playing. They cancelled us! Please check the website or phone for up to the minute details of our performances.

I need your help…

We are now also able, by the wonders of modern technology, to offer you the opportunity to receive your newsletter electronically via the internet. If this appeals to you then tick the third box and write your e-mail address on the card. When it comes to the time, I will send you an e-link that you can click on to download your copy of the newsletter.

Contests Results.
Stevenage—National regional heat. We came fourth playing Variations for Brass Band by Vaughan Williams. This means
promotion to National first section from January 2006.
Hove - Fifth place at the SCABA Spring Contest on 24th April
We played Variations again.
Weston Super Mare - 15th May. We came fourth from seven bands playing Kaleidoscope by Phillip Sparke We were pleased with this result as we were up against some good bands. To top this off the band had a great day out. Fish and Chip lunch on the sea front, sandcastles on the beach and ice cream on the pier. Plus, we met up with some past band members and old friends which was great.
