THE NEWSLETTER OF CRYSTAL PALACE BAND

Issue: 15 (May 2006)

Contests
Our first venture into the National first section saw us all up early on Sunday 19th March and heading for the regional competition in Stevenage. We were drawn 8th in an entry of sixteen bands and I think it is fair to say that we were all generally pleased with the way we played. Our soloists did their stuff and we gave a good performance of a challenging piece but the result does not make it look that way. We came 15th. We were somewhat deflated but we must remember that it is a tough section and many of the other bands are very experienced at playing at this level of competition or higher. So instead of looking back and becoming disheartened we turned our attentions to the next contest at Hove on the 23rd April. We competed with a slightly different line up of players. Yes the band is strong enough these days that we can change players so that everyone had a chance to compete. We came 6th this time which sounds much better but it was still second to last.
The B band, however have done well in their first ever competition. They competed at The Croydon Music Festival and won the Richard Gilbert Trophy.

Concerts
With competitions over for a while we turn our minds to the summer jobs and choosing and rehearsing the music for them. As usual our programmes will be very varied. On a serious note we will be commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart by playing some arrangements of his music and for those of you who like Gilbert and Sullivan we shall delight you with our rendition of the music from The Mikado. On a lighter note we have the film music from Superman back in our music folders after an absence of some years and also a selection from that ever-popular musical West Side Story. The scoop for this summer is an arrangement of the theme tune from the Wallace and Gromit films procured from the composer himself by our clever Librarian Maggie.

The programme for our next bandstand concert at Canbury Gardens in Kingston will include, as usual, a wide variety of music and we will also be featuring some of our soloists. The gardens are in a lovely location next to the river so come along and listen and hopefully, weather permitting, we will all enjoy a great afternoon.
