On the ª J lead, Silverstone won the queen and, for want of anything better to do, played off Ace, King and Queen of diamonds, Saelensminde as North discarding © 5 on the third round. Declarer now made the key play of a fourth round of diamonds, discarding § 4 from his own hand. North, not expecting such distribution and wanting to keep his spade holding intact, also discarded a club!

Silverstone now emerged with eleven tricks on a hand where every other declarer bar one went off.

(The only other successful declarer was Howard Melbourne, who received © A lead enabling him to get the hearts going).
