LEDERER MEMORIAL TROPHY 2000

The 2000 Lederer Memorial Trophy was held at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club on 4th-5th November. This prestigious event, staged each year by the London Metropolitan Bridge Association, is for invited teams which include most of England's top players and many stars from elsewhere.

Best bid hand: Erik Saelensminde & Tomas Charlsen (Norway)

Best played hand: Victor Silverstone (President's team)

Best defence: Howard Melbourne & Gary Hyett (Gold Cup Winners)

Most humorous incident :: Colin Simpson (All Stars)

The last award was given to Colin Simpson for reporting a story against himself. He arrived at the table at the start of the match between the All Stars and England to find Andrew Robson, Nicola Smith and Heather Dhondy sitting there waiting for Zia and surrounded by kibitzers. He explained to the players that they were at the wrong table, so they got up to move. And to Colin's chagrin, all the kibitzers to a man got up and walked out too!

Because of the weather and disruptions to the railways, two teams, Ireland and the Gold Cup Winners, had to field last-minute substitute players. Despite this, both did well in the competition, Ireland leading for much of the event, though at the end the holders came through to win for the third year running. The final positions were:

1 Zia's All Stars (Holders) 259
