Our Parish Project in South Sudan

Parish Church - Mupoi
Diocese of Tombura Yambio, South Sudan
‘The parish has undertaken to support the work of the diocese of Tombura
– Yambio in South Sudan. This project is being managed for us by Aid to
the Church in Need, whose national headquarters are in this parish.
The Catholic diocese of Tombura-Yambio is situated in the Western Equatorial
State bordering the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic
of Congo. The diocese covers seven counties of the Western Equatorial State,
namely, Maridi, Ibba, Yambio, Nzara, Ezo, Tombura and Nagero. There are
twelve parishes in the diocese. The current population of Catholics is
over 1,000,000, constituting over 60% of the total population. The majority
of the inhabitants of the region are Azande. There are also other ethnic
groups such as Balanda, Baka, Mundu, Muru, and Avukaya.
The diocese, like the whole of Sudan, is emerging from the tragedies of
war. There is 80% illiteracy and 30-40% infant mortality. The diocese has
a team of 35 priests, a good number of religious and over 400 catechists,
as well as others involved in various forms of pastoral and social work.
The bishop of the diocese is Right Reverend Eduard Hilboro Kussala.
At present (2014) our parish is giving some financial support towards the
renovation of the presbytery at the parish of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs,
Mupoi in the dioceses. Following recent civil war the building is in urgent
need of repair.
